Understanding these mechanisms offers a unique edge in optimizing user experience and potentially boosting conversions.

How Google’s Prefetching Works

On a desktop search results page (SERP), Chrome performs two types of prefetch actions:

  1. The Top 2 Advantage: As soon as a Google SERP loads, Chrome automatically starts secretly pre-loading the pages for the top two organic search results. The assumption? You’re most likely to click one of them.
  2. The Hover-Triggered Boost: For every other organic result, Chrome waits. But the moment you hover your mouse cursor over a link, it immediately attempts to pre-load that page too.

The goal is simple: by the time you actually click, the page is already loaded or significantly advanced in its loading process, leading to a near-instant user experience.

When the Speed Boost Fails: Prefetch Ineligibility

This brilliant speed-up only works if the preloaded page can be safely “reused” for any user who clicks. If your page has certain characteristics that make the preloaded data unique to a specific user or session, Chrome will abandon the preloaded page and discard the speed gain.

The most common reasons a page fails to be prefetched successfully are:

  • User-Specific Cookies: If your page sets a unique, user-specific cookie (like a session ID or login status) on the very first visit.
  • Service Worker Registration: Pages that register a Service Worker (common in Progressive Web Apps or for advanced caching) can sometimes interfere.
  • Slow Page Performance: If your page takes too long to load (even in the background), Chrome’s prefetch attempt will time out and be canceled.

If your page falls into one of these categories, Chrome still tries to prefetch, but the user won’t get the speed benefit.

How to Test Your Site’s Prefetch Eligibility

  1. Open Incognito: Start a new Chrome Incognito window. This ensures you’re testing like a brand-new user without existing cookies.
  2. Google Search: Perform a Google search that brings up your target website in the top results.
  3. Open DevTools: Right-click anywhere on the SERP and select Inspect (Ctrl+Shift+I / Cmd+Option+I).
  4. Go to ‘Application’ Tab: In DevTools, click the Application tab (use the » if you don’t see it).
  5. Find ‘Speculative loads’: In the left-hand menu, find and click Speculative loads (under Background Services).
